For your next adventure, you’ll be going to one of the most beautiful regions in the Indian subcontinent: Hunza Valley, in the heart of Gilgit-Baltistan, the north of Pakistan. Before the construction of the Karakoram Highway, which was finished in the eighties, Hunza was long closed off to most of the world as it was very difficult to reach through steep and dangerous mountain passes. It was even until 1974 that Hunza used to be ruled by princes and until the separation of 1947 it was even an independent country!
The fertile, lush green mountainous valley of Hunza is known for its turquoise Hunza river which meanders through lavish fields of blossoms in all colors, overseen by dramatic mountains and strong forths, truly heaven on earth. Nearby we find high peaks such as Ultar Sar, Hunza Peak, Diran, Rakaposhi, Ghenta Sar and many other famous mountain tops.
Karimabad will be your base and we will visit the highlights of the valley such as the old historical part of Karimabad and the Altit and Baltit Fort, which are completely different from any castle you have seen before, all restored and maintained by Aga Khan, the spiritual leader of the Ismaili Shia residents of the valley, and after whom the town is named. Karimabad is also an excellent place to shop for dry friends, carpets, shawls, gemstones and many other products. You will feel very welcome by this warm, amicable people, whose culture is clearly unique and different from the rest of Pakistan.
As Hunza is home to some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world (it is hard to beat the sight of several 7.000 m and 8.000 m mountains accompanied of blue rivers and green valleys), a trip to this region will be one you’ll never forget and chances are that you’ll most likely come back to discover even more. We offer several tours on our page which include short and long treks to meet all kinds of demands. All of them are fine choices, really, and you cannot go wrong. Beneath is a programme for a shorter tour in which we offer a not too difficult tour to Fairy Meadows and Nanga Parbat Base Camp, which can easily be done by fit hikers.
Fairy Meadows is located next to Nanga Parbat, the ninth tallest mountain in the world, known for the deep green fields and breathtaking views of the surrounding scenery. The place was named by the Australian mountaineer Hermann Bhul in 1952 for its mesmerizing allure while he was here for his climbing expedition on the Nanga Parbat, also known as the Killer Mountain.
We will start our journey by discovering the forts of Karimabad and its surroundings, after which we will hit the Karakoram Highway towards the Raikot Bridge, the gateway to Nanga Parbat Base Camp, passing the village of Tattu first, a scenic road trip. The National Park of Fairy Meadows is best visited between April and September. The main attraction here is the view of Nanga Parbat Mountain (8.126 m) and trekking to the Base Camp. The area consists of green grasslands and alpine forest with juniper, birch trees. It is home to the endangered musk deer.
The Nanga Parbat was climbed by the Austrian mountaineer Hermann Buhl in 1953 after many failed attempts, killing 31 people before him, hence why it’s called Killer Mountain. It is home to one of the highest ice and rock walls in the world. As we only go to the base camp, you don’t need to be afraid of any technical climbing as this trek doesn’t require much mountain experience. It is important to be in good shape and to follow instructions from our experienced guides.
