History in the heart of Sindh: 4 days (November – March)

*** Trips to Balochistan and most of Sindh are best done between November and March. From April to September it is too hot, especially in the desert areas.
*** Know that itineraries can always change, we try to do our best to see as much as possible.

Our next stop is Bhanbhore or Bhambhore, a city dating to the 1st century BC where we find the remains of one of the oldest mosques in the region. On the site we find remains from three different periods: Scytho-Parthian, Hindu-Budhist and early Islamic. The city was deserted after the 13th century. Remains of houses, streets, and other buildings have been found both within and outside the citadel as well as a Shiva temple from the Hindu period, and a mosque. Three gateways to the citadel were also uncovered during excavations.

Next on the agenda is Thatta, where we can find Makli Necropolis, one of the largest funerary sites in the world, with approximately 500,000 to 1 million tombs built during a four century period. We can find many large funerary monuments from royals, sufi saints, poets and intellectuals. It is one of the most important UNESCO World Heritage sites in the province. Many of the tombs feature carved decorative motifs and the funerary architecture of the largest monuments houses Muslim, Hindu, Persian, Mughal, and Gujarati influences. We’ll have a visit to the Shah Jahan Mosque, built in 1647 AD by the Moghal Emperor Shahjehan. We’ll continue to Hyderabad, where we’ll stay for the night or stay at Keenjhar Lake Resort.

On the next day we’ll go on the long road (4 – 5 hours) to Mohenjo-daro, an ancient city built around 2600 BCE and once the largest civilization in the Indus Valley.

The entire site is built by unbaked brick and shows sophisticated city planning with areas for commercial shops, residences, wells, public houses and systems of sanitation and drain management. It is the most ancient and best-preserved urban archeological site in the Indian subcontinent and a great experience. Tonight we’ll sleep in the town of Mehar or Lankara.

On the third day we’ll drive to the town of Sehwan Sharif, a historic city known for being home of one of Pakistan’s most important Sufi shrines, the Shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar. Sehwan is one of Pakistan’s most important spiritual centers.

The Shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. Another famous place is the inverted city.

Afterwards we’ll continue to Ranikot Fort, located in the Kirthar National Park. The Ranikot fort is built on the hills in the north-east of the park and is one of the largest forts in the world and with its 10 meter walls made from lime-cut sandstone it’s 26 km in circumference. Tonight we’ll sleep in Hyderabad or a guesthouse near Ranikot Fort.

On our fourth and last day we’ll go back to Karachi where we’ll arrive around noon.
