Camping and hiking trip in the mountains of Pakistan’s Hoppar Valley and Rash Peak climbing

The north of Pakistan is one of the most scenic regions in the world when it comes to mountaineering and mountain hiking. It is the dream of many adventurers, hikers and mountaineers to one day come to this magnificent place. With so many peaks to choose from, it is difficult to make a choice. Some people might also be worried they lack the experience to travel to the mountains and sadly never make it up here. We have a wide variety of treks and travels all over Gilgit-Baltistan and one of our favorite treks is through the Hoppar Valley in which we climb the Rash Peak and visith Rash Lake. This camping trip offers great hiking, splendid views and there is also room for culture and history. The tour is a good introduction to the mountains of Pakistan.

This trip will take you all the way to the Hunza Valley and Hoppar Valley in the north of Pakistan, which are without a doubt the most beautiful valleys in Gilgit-Baltistan. We will start in Karimabad, the heart of Hunza and home to the mighty Altit and Baltit Fort, once home to the mirs of Hunza, back when Hunza was still an independent country. This astonishing region is open throughout the whole year and every season has its beauty. In springtime the Hunza valley is covered with blossoms in all kinds of colors, followed by deep green colors during summer and when the leaves start to turn, the region is a feast of green, yellow, orange, brown and golden colors and everything in between. Winters are cold and make hiking difficult, but the white carpet makes the entire place look magical.

On our travel we will cross the Hunza river and go to the Hoppar Valley, where we can see the enormous Spantik and Hopar glaciers. The Hoppar Valley is without a doubt one of the most scenic part of Nagar, which once was a princely state just like Hunza. Before the arrival of the Karakoram road, the princely states of Hunza and Nagar were seldomly visited as one had to dare hike the dangerous trails leading to the valley. We will pass several villages on our way through the Hoppar Valley and the snow-capped mountains are home to many animals such as foxes, wolves, ibex, bears and even snow leopards. There are many famous mountains such as Miar Peak, Golden Peak , Rash Peak, Diran Peak and we can also see Rakaposhi. For this travel we will focus on Rash Peak.

The mighty Rash Peak’s summit is an impressive 5.098 meter and is the objective of our trip together with Rash Lake (Rash Pari), which means ‘sparkling lake’. It is the perfect trip for people who don’t have too much trekking experience and exciting enough for experienced hikers as well as there is plenty to entertain us. During the next few days we will pass small villages, cross glaciers and have jaw-dropping views from the summit of Rash Peak over the Karakoram Mountains. We will also make time for a one day hike in the Ultar Meadow. Ultar is an exceptionally beautiful mountain of 7.388 m high and is accompanied by glaciers and granite rock formations. Some locals believe that the top was once home to a fairy queen living in a crystal palace.
