Mountain trek to Hispar La from Skardu

Our travel company offers many kinds of tours in Pakistan such as hiking and training courses on climbing. Most of our hikes are accessible to moderate. We also offer a few more difficult treks for experienced climbers. These treks are led by government licensed professional guides with years of experience and assisted by a team of seasoned porters and supporting staff.

Warning! This is a very difficult trip!! Every year solo trekkers disappear and accidents are not unheard of. This trek should only be done with the help of a local experienced guy who knows the way. The trip is done by several hundreds of trekkers each year who pass the difficult route over the glaciers in one of the most beautiful regions in Pakistan. Specialized mountaineering equipment is required. It’s important to communicate well with us as we can offer all material.

Most of the trekking is done on glaciers and demands traveling in roped teams. The debris-covered lower sections of the glaciers are very difficult and the upper sections are full with cracks. This trek should only be done by experienced people.

The strenuous trek starts at Thungol on the right of the Biafo Glacier and many of the peaks are in the 5.500 – 7.300 meter range. Behind the Hispar La pass we find a snow lake which is sometimes used by adventurous skiers. The Biafo Glacier and Hispar Glacier meet at the Hispar Glacier and together they form the longest glacial traverse in the world, outside of the polar regions. They form a 100 km long ice road connecting Nagar with Baltistan. The trek offers impressive views of the 7.800 meter high peaks.

The trek starts in Askole village, 3.040 meters above sea level and the final settlement before entering the Karakorams. The village is beautifully located and there are several campsites in the area. It is the gateway for many eight-thousanders such as K2 and Broad Peak. The area is interesting enough to spend even one or two days camping and exploring and the region is also known to be home to many different animals such as ibex, markhor, fox, wolves, eagles, bears and even snow leopards can be seen.

For your trek you’ll be with an experienced team. Our local guides have done the trek numerous times and are all certified by the government. They are accompanied by well-trained porters. If you are reading this page because you’re looking for information on the trek, we cannot emphasize enough the importance of hiring experienced people for this trip, even if it’s not us. You might even be denied entering the area by the police if you’re not accompanied. As the trek is hard it is necessary to have porters to help us carry all our gear. The number of porters varies from 3 to 6 or more.
