There are around 362 bird species all over Gilgit-Baltistan according to birdsofgilgit.com and there is a great variety of waterfowl (up to 86 species), especially during spring and autumn. There are a number of birds of prey such as hawks, eagles, vultures, owls and falcons.
The best areas for birding are around Diamer, Gilgit, Shigar and Kharmang. The higher up the lower the diversity. The best period to come birding is in September and October when there are a lot of migratory birds present, mostly around the lakes. The total number of species can be as high as 250 species, during winters the number of species is only between 100 and 150 kinds of birds and during spring it goes up again.
We can find golden eagle, snow cock, lammergeier, snow pigeon, European bee-eater, Kashmir nut cracker, horned lark, peregrine falcon, Eurasian scops-owl among many others.
For birding tours in the north of Pakistan we recommend September – October, followed by July – August, but starting from the end of March the numbers of birds are increasing after winter. Our tours start from Skardu, from where we’ll spend 5 days in Deosai National Park and several lakes such as Sadpara Lake and Sheoshar Lake. We’ll spend every day searching for birds and providing you the best opportunities for viewing and bird photography. You will be with an experienced birder who knows the area well and will help you with your bird photography.
Day 1: Arrival in Skardu and transfer to your hotel
Day 2 – 6: Camping in the area around Skardu and Deosai National Park
Day 7: Transfer back to Skardu.
There are flights from Islamabad to Skardu, although they are sometimes canceled. In this case it takes one and a half day to drive. So please, keep this in mind and add four buffer days and also an extra day for PCR-testing in case you need this. Let us know if you would like to arrange overland transport through us.
